Ten Tips for Welcoming New Catholics

The Role of the Community in RCIA

Every year, in parishes across the country and throughout the world, candidates for the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) prepare to become members of the Catholic Church.

Those discerning and preparing to enter the Church depend on the support and encouragement of the whole Church, not only to welcome them, but also to join with them in following Christ.

Here are a few ways members of the parish community can get involved in supporting those on the journey to initiation.

Pray—offer prayers for them or commit to praying for one particular catechumen or candidate.

Attend the Easter Vigil—the “night of nights” during which the Church keeps vigil for the Resurrection of Jesus.  During the Easter Vigil the new members are welcomed into the Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.

Be Welcoming—In the weeks following Easter the newly baptized are looking for their places in the community of the Church.  Make them feel welcome and let them know that their presence in the community is important.

Get Involved—There are many facets to the catechumenate.  Each depends on members of the Church to facilitate, teach or serve as sponsors.

Keep Growing in Faith—After celebrating the sacraments of initiation the newly initiated continue their formation in the faith in the period called mystagogy.  During this period, they reflect on their encounters with Christ in the sacraments and learn more about the faith they now share.  Mystagogy is ongoing and is essentially what all members of the Church are called to do throughout our lives:  grow deeper in our faith and our relationship with Christ, constantly discerning God’s will for us.

Dear Parishioners,

There are certain songs I don’t like to sing at Mass.  I sometimes don’t like the melody, the rhythm, or the words.  At times I simply do not want to participate.  However, I am reminded deep within that true worship is an act of self-giving, and in a spirit of communion and generosity I must add my voice.  Catholics seem to struggle with singing.  Though we might be above the average at St. Michael, there still is a large percentage of the community that does not lift its voice in song.  There is a high degree of self-consciousness (especially among men) about the lack of a decent singing voice.  We need to put that aside; believe it or not, the power of the assembly of voices can overcome individual weaknesses.  With whatever voice God gave you, you are to give it proudly back to him!  Being overly self-conscious is a matter of ego, and we are constantly reminded by the gospel to be self-less.  Many people come to Mass to receive; they do not come to give.  Such an attitude is opposed to the gospel of Jesus Christ, who came not to be served but to serve.   As I look out at the Sunday or Saturday assembly, I see people who keep their arms crossed, their mouths tight, and their participation barely audible   And yet the fundamental attitude of the whole of Christian living is to be of service – even at Mass the issue is “How can I serve?”  Not showing up does not serve God’s people.  Arriving late does not serve the assembly; leaving early is not an act of selfless service.  Passive resistance to actively participating does not serve the assembly.  Every act of worship asks us to let go of ourselves and embrace Christ, including joining in the song of God’s people.  So, people of God, lift up your voices in acclamation; gifted or not we need your song!

Fr. Kevin

Dear Parishioners,

As of the end of December 2011, the construction loan on the new church stands at $157,000.

We have met our goal for the 2011 Diocesan Ministry Fund, but $1,305 pledged is still outstanding.

Pledges and donations for the Diocesan Ministry Fund for this year are already coming in! $76,202 is our assessment! (slightly down from last year’s.)

We’re still looking for donors for the Friends St. Anthony Chapel campaign so that the inside of the chapel might be completed this year.

Thank you for your continued generosity!

Fr. Kevin

A Day of Healing Prayer
The Colorado Catholic Charismatic Committee will present a day of prayer and reflection on “Generational Healing of the Family Tree”, with Fr. Denis Phaneuf.  Saturday, February 18th, 2012, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 1132 W. Oro Grande Drive, Pueblo West, from 9 AM through 4 PM, and a Healing Mass to be celebrated at 7 PM.  All are invited to attend!

REMINDER:  CHURCH CLEANING will be the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month at 9:00 a.m.  Please call the Parish Office at 275-7549 if you are interesting in helping.  Thank you.

HOLY LAND TOUR -I will be directing a tour of the Holy Land this November 6 – 16, 2012.  The tour description is available online at www.travelillume.com/trc/lco/, or through the parish office.  This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the biblical roots of our faith.  – Fr. Kevin

ST. JOHN’S UNIVERSITY CHOIR CONCERT

St. Michael Catholic Church is pleased to welcome once again, the Saint John’s University Chorus from Collegeville, MN.  They will be here to sing in concert for our community of Tuesday, March 6th at 7:30 p.m.  The Saint John’s University has approximately 45 voices, 25 female and 20 male.  They travel the world doing concerts of sacred and secular music.  The choir asks each parish to provide a potluck before each concert in order to meet and visit with parishioners.  Therefore, we will begin our potluck at 5:00 p.m., in the gymnasium prior to the concert at 7:30 p.m.  Potluck dishes will be needed and should be provided based on the alphabet system we have used in the past.

A-J ~ Meat, Main Dish
K-S ~ Salad, Side Dish
T-Z ~ Dessert

The singers will also need guest homes to stay for the night.  Guest homes will be asked to house 1-4 singers, provide breakfast the next morning and a ride back to the church for their departure at 7:30 a.m.  We will need to secure housing for this choir as soon as possible.  Please call Laurie Mendon at 276-1285, if you can open your home for choir members to stay on the night of March 6th.  Thank you.
