RESHAPE US INTO WORTHY VESSELS
The Liturgy Planning Committee has invited us to reflect on the first readings for this Advent Season and the prophet Isaiah is the voice of Advent for the first three Sundays this year. This first Sunday, Isaiah pours out his heart that the Lord might act again in history for the sake of his glory. As He did in the past, may He do in the present, defeat Israel’s enemies, and overcome their own hardheartedness. The work of God, however, is contingent on the conversion of the hearts of his people. The rebuilding of the nation will depend upon whether he can transform them, reshape them, and make them worthy vessels of his presence for the sake of the world.
Advent, as a penitential season, is an opportunity for our own conversion. God wants to reshape us as worthy vessels so that we might carry his presence to others. In order that that might happen in us, he must help us overcome our selfishness, our pride, our pettiness and our disordered priorities. In prayer he reminds us of who he has been for the sake of our salvation, and that he will continue to meet us in our need if we turn to him with our whole hearts. Our preoccupations with preparations for Christmas often defeat our intentions. May this Advent Season be a time when we allow the love of God to make us vessels of his presence.
Fr. Kevin

When he spoke about preparing for Christmas, St. Bernard of Clairvaux focused on three comings, not just one. We know about the first coming, when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. But St. Bernard also urged people to get ready for Jesus’ second coming at the end of time. And, just as important, he spoke about an intermediate coming of Christ—here and now.
The same Jesus who was born two thousand years ago is here right now. He wants to fill us with heavenly grace to help us live good and holy lives. But as St. Bernard taught, it’s up to us to invite Jesus into our lives and ask him for his grace.
To help us prepare for Christmas, God invites us to spend these next four weeks, the season of Advent, focusing on Jesus’ coming among us. But the season of Advent has a double focus. We know that it is a time to prepare for the coming of Jesus in humility as a baby. But it is also a time to look forward to the day when he will come again, this time in glory as our King.
This double focus of Advent poses a questions for us. How shall we prepare?
Your faith formation team members of GIFT will be offering different materials for your home use during Advent. Each week new materials will be available for you to pick-up and take home. Look for the display in the gathering space.
