THE ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE of St. Michael’s Church is to set an atmosphere and a mood for Seasonal Liturgical Celebrations throughout the year.  We are re-organizing our committee and are in need of our parishioners, both men and women to be involved.  We have a coordinator (Pat Ruder) and now need the help of many parishioners with ideas and commitment . . . many makes lighter work for all!!  Please prayfully consider this stewardship opportunity and call the office at 275-7549.

Christmas Environment was completed this year by very few people and we would like to Thank each and everyone who participated in the decorations this year, without your help we would not be able to achieve our goal to make our Worship Space, as well as the Gathering Space, a beautiful place for this year’s Liturgical celebration.

Our apology to those children and parents who came to assist with the decorations and due to a confusion about the time, were unable to help, thanks for your desire to lend a hand, we appreciated your being there.

CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA COLLECTION ~ Next weekend, January 21/22, 2012, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America.  Many unique challenges face the Church in that region.  A lack of priests and trained lay ministers, high emigration rates, and the alarming pace at which parishioners are leaving the faith make it difficult for the region’s Church to provide for the faithful.  It is more important than ever that we keep faith with the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean.  Please give generously.  Thank you.

ST. JOHN’S UNIVERSITY CHOIR CONCERT

St. Michael Catholic Church is pleased to welcome once again, the Saint John’s University Chorus from Collegeville, MN.  They will be here to sing in concert for our community of Tuesday, March 6th at 7:30 p.m.  The Saint John’s University has approximately 45 voices, 25 female and 20 male.  They travel the world doing concerts of sacred and secular music.  The choir asks each parish to provide a potluck before each concert in order to meet and visit with parishioners.  Therefore, we will begin our potluck at 5:00 p.m., in the gymnasium prior to the concert at 7:30 p.m.  Potluck dishes will be needed and should be provided based on the alphabet system we have used in the past.

A-J ~ Meat, Main Dish
K-S ~ Salad, Side Dish
T-Z ~ Dessert

The singers will also need guest homes to stay for the night.  Guest homes will be asked to house 1-4 singers, provide breakfast the next morning and a ride back to the church for their departure at 7:30 a.m.  We will need to secure housing for this choir as soon as possible.  Please call Laurie Mendon at 276-1285, if you can open your home for choir members to stay on the night of March 6th.

Thank you.

Confirmation

Jesus said to Nicodemus: "No one can enter into the kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit"
    (John 3:5)

The presence of the Spirit in the life of the Catholic Christian is intricately involved in the Baptism that precedes it.  We are washed, purified and welcomed into the family of Christ and sealed with his promise to be with us always in the laying on of hands and the anointing with the Holy Chrism.

The Second Vatican Council emphasized two important dimensions of the Sacrament of Confirmation.  First, Confirmation is intimately connected to the Sacraments of Initiation - begun in Baptism and completed with the reception of the Holy Eucharist.  Our use of the word process to describe the developing sense of conversion distinguishes Confirmation as not only a strengthening of the spiritual gifts, but an interaction within a community on the journey to everlasting life.

Second, the focus has changed from being passive recipients of the sacramental graces and gifts to an expectation that having been given the gifts of the Spirit, Catholics of all ages are meant to actively use those gifts and witness to the life of Christ within them and within the community.
