2011 DIOCESAN MINISTRY FUND
(Reminder to pay off your DMF Pledge)
Our 2011 DMF assessment is $76,595 and parishioners pledged $80,838.17. As of January 6, the parishioner pledged amount has a balance of $4,243.17 to be paid by January 31, 2012. Any shortfall will be paid by the Parish Operating Account. Any excess will be returned to the Parish. Thank you for your generous support of the Diocesan Ministry Fund.
Dear Parishioners,
In reviewing the parish financials, it surprises me that some people do not contribute to the operating of the parish; some contribute very little; some are hit and miss; and some give with extraordinary generosity.
The reasons for not giving, or giving in fits and starts, or giving little are probably many and varied. But I know that some will find any excuse to avoid financial support. For some reason, some parishioners feel that it belongs to someone else to keep the lights on, the heat running, and ensure that the work of the parish staff continues. Some feel entitled to what the parish provides without any commitment on their part. And some just don’t realize that we count on their support! Faithful financial stewardship is an obligation, not an option; it is our response to the love of God!
Good household fiscal stewardship each year should include a plan for charitable giving. The standard for giving is called “tithing” – giving the first 10% back to God in gratitude for all that he has given us. The suggested church offering is 4% of one’s annual income to the parish church and1% to the Diocesan Ministry Fund. This allows us to give the other 5% to other charities of our choice. Knowing our fiscal responsibility, and knowing our annual household income and expenses, allows us to be faithful and fair in our giving.
Catholic Stewardship is a way of life, not a periodic hand-out. As we launch this year’s support of the diocese through the Diocesan Ministry Fund collection, I ask you to consider again your stewardship, and respond with true gratitude for all that God has given you.

ST. JOHN’S UNIVERSITY CHOIR CONCERT
St. Michael Catholic Church is pleased to welcome once again, the Saint John’s University Chorus from Collegeville, MN. They will be here to sing in concert for our community of Tuesday, March 6th at 7:30 p.m. The Saint John’s University has approximately 45 voices, 25 female and 20 male. They travel the world doing concerts of sacred and secular music. The choir asks each parish to provide a potluck before each concert in order to meet and visit with parishioners. Therefore, we will begin our potluck at 5:00 p.m., in the gymnasium prior to the concert at 7:30 p.m. Potluck dishes will be needed and should be provided based on the alphabet system we have used in the past.
A-J ~ Meat, Main Dish
K-S ~ Salad, Side Dish
T-Z ~ Dessert
The singers will also need guest homes to stay for the night. Guest homes will be asked to house 1-4 singers, provide breakfast the next morning and a ride back to the church for their departure at 7:30 a.m. We will need to secure housing for this choir as soon as possible. Please call Laurie Mendon at 276-1285, if you can open your home for choir members to stay on the night of March 6th. Thank you.

THE PEACE AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE is still in its formation and we are currently establishing priorities and setting goals. Our hope is to bring attention to and address needs in the local and global communities. Our first project was to start a Prison Ministry and a few parishioners have already committed. We are looking for additional members and welcome new ideas. Our next meeting is Sunday, January 29th; we will meet after Mass in the old church. If you have any questions, contact Patricia Reilley at 285-8946. Please join us!
CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA COLLECTION ~ This weekend, January 21/22, 2012, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. Many unique challenges face the Church in that region. A lack of priests and trained lay ministers, high emigration rates, and the alarming pace at which parishioners are leaving the faith make it difficult for the region’s Church to provide for the faithful. It is more important than ever that we keep faith with the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. Please give generously. Thank you.

Toward Christian Unity
Today, January 22, 2012,
is Ecumenical Sunday, a day
when we Christians are urged to
pray and work for Christian unity.
The ecumenical movement
was born
over 100 years ago, when 1300
representatives from various
Protestant denominations met in
Edinburgh, Scotland,
to seek ways to reconcile some
of their divisions, divisions they
recognized as scandalous.
Today, the ecumenical
movement includes Protestant,
Catholic and Orthodox
Congregations from virtually
All over the world.
What does the ecumenical
movement have to do with us?
First, we are reminded to pray that
Christian churches need to work
tirelessly to make Jesus’ words
a reality: “That they all may be one.”
We can also bring a
non-Catholic friend to Mass
or share the beliefs and
traditions of our church with them.
